HIST 227 - Introduction to Latin American History and Culture I (3 units) Development of the Iberian states as colonizing powers, the discovery and conquest of America, the growth of political, social and economic institutions during the Colonial period, the independence movement in Spanish and Portuguese America and the historical development of the leading republics since independence.

Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. analyze, evaluate, and interpret primary sources. 2. analyze and clearly explain the argument, main points, and use of evidence in secondary sources. 3. clearly and effectively articulate an original interpretation in verbal and written form. 4. identify key events, issues, and policies related to development of the Iberian states from the pre-Colombian through the colonial period.
