HIST 340 - Modern African Diaspora and Popular Cultures (3 units) CO10, CO11
Through an analysis of cultural sources and literary texts, this course examines/analyzes social change, politics, economics, public health, gender, identity, diaspora and global African Diaspora communities.
Grading Basis: Graded

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. analyze and understand the dynamics and complexities of the African Diaspora in an increasingly globalized world.
2. analyze and discuss processes that contributed to the creation and re-constitution of the African Diaspora, including forced migrations of African captives to the New World, colonialism, work migrations, and voluntary migrations.
3. analyze and understand the experience of the African Diaspora in “host” countries and how members of the Diaspora have struggled for equality and inclusion.
4. critically examine cultural sources and make well-supported claims about the contribution of the African Diaspora to the modern world.
5. write a short essay whose thesis is supported by evidence from an assigned reading.
