Social and cultural aspects of the American Civil War; representations of the war in literature, art, film and public commemoration from 1865 to present.

Prerequisite(s): General Education courses (CO1-CO3) completed; at least 3 courses from CO4-CO8 completed; Junior or Senior standing.  Recommended Preparation: HIST 101 .

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. explain the cause, course, and outcomes of the Civil War as well as its cultural valences for diverse Americans in different parts of the nation.
2. analyze and interpret primary and secondary sources relating to the Civil War and its cultural valences.
3. identify primary and secondary sources and use them to develop and answer a research question.
4. craft arguments and defend them in a clear and persuasive manner.
