1. analyze and interpret primary sources from nineteenth-century America through discussions, written assignments, and oral presentations.
2. explain the expansion and division of the United States and the cultural valences for diverse Americans in different parts of the nation.
3. synthesize, analyze, and convey complex historical information by means of a final project.
