HIST 441 - American Environmental History (3 units) CO9, CO13
A cultural and social history of the American Environment from c. 1620 to c. 2000, focusing on the historical impact of scientific and technological knowledge on the environment and human society.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. analyze, evaluate, and interpret primary sources. (CO13)
2. analyze and clearly explain the argument, main points, and use of evidence in secondary sources, including distinguishing between sound and unsound interpretations of scientific information. (CO9, CO13)
3. clearly and effectively articulate an original interpretation of an environmental problem that includes an explanation of how science relates to this problem in verbal and written form. (CO9, CO13)
4. identify how scientific and technological developments affect society and the environment, particularly with regard to social and environmental problems in the United States including but not limited to climate change. (CO9)
5. analyze the scientific debates and ethical concerns of such issues as climate change, environmental justice, and resource extraction. (CO9)
