JM 706 - Applied Ethics in Justice Management (3 units) Ethical dilemmas and application of codes of professional responsibility for court, agency, and corrections personnel, attorneys, and judges. Distinction between legal obligations and moral duties.

Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. identify common ethical issues and dilemmas found in or arising from the practice of the following professions or performing the following jobs: prosecutors, defense attorneys, judges, mental health professionals, social workers, juvenile probation officers, adult probation and parole officers, law enforcement, corrections, psychologists and others. 2. apply key ethics concepts and ethical decision-making frameworks and protocols. 3. the relationship between ethical standards and cultural/social diversity. 4. demonstrate understanding of how to apply ethical standards for various professional groups by familiarization with such ethical codes as the NASW Code of Ethics, the American Probation & Parole Code of Ethics and the American Psychological Association Code of Ethics and use of these various codes as a background for a comparative analysis. 5. demonstrate understanding of that ethical strategies should be designed to protect clients and the general public as well as to serve as a regulatory tool for members of the profession that some professions abide by codes of ethics voluntarily, that some professions are ethically regulated by law. 6. demonstrate understanding of the prevention measures that can be implemented to identify potential ethics problem areas, how ethics complaints can arise, and how ethics complaints can lead to lawsuits. 7. clarify the relationship between legal and professional ethics.
