An historical survey from 1500 to 1800, and from 1800 to the present: includes musical style, text setting, and nationalistic trends.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. identify the major musical contributors to Italian song and German lied.
2. demonstrate cursory knowledge of the literary players important to both Italian song and German lied.
3. build an understanding of the historical context and trajectory of both Italian song and German lied.
4. develop active listening skills by being exposed to a wide array of Italian Song and German Lied .
5. develop the ability to perform repertoire from the various styles of Italian song and German lied.
