MUS 371 - High School Music Practicum (2 units) Discussion of music development, assessment, management, and school culture in the high school setting. Includes field experience in a local high school.
Grading Basis: Graded Units of Lecture: 2 Offered: Every Fall - Odd Years
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. take part in successful teaching experiences with high school students under the mentorship of experienced teachers. 2. indentify best practices of various components of teaching, e.g. curricular choices, sequencing, and assessment, utilized by high school music teachers. 3. discuss how students of different abilities can be accommodated in the music classroom. 4. indentify classroom management strategies and describe the impact that management (or lack thereof) has on a music classroom. 5. reflect upon and compare curricular choices of high school music teachers. 6. observe and apply routines, procedures, and schedules that make high school music programs work successfully. 7. discuss the impact of National, State, and District Standards as well as the Common Core on music programs. 8. articulate how students and student learning impact teacher choices in the music classroom through written assignments and verbal discussions.
