MUS 431 - Exploring World Music

Music and human culture focusing on non-Core Humanities. Representative societies explored. Field study, music-making projects, performance analysis required.

Prerequisite(s): General Education courses (CO1-CO3) completed; at least 3 courses from CO4-CO8 completed; Junior or Senior standing; MUS 121  or MUS 342 .

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. analyze the cultural contexts of specific musical pieces and traditions.
2. apply their historical and cultural knowledge of the music of various non-western cultures to the analysis of specific pieces of music.
3. demonstrate the aural and visual skills necessary to achieve an analytical perspective on unfamiliar musical forms.
4. demonstrate skills related to empathy and cultural sensitivity, via the study of global musical cultures.
5. discuss music as an activity that shapes the images and ideals through which individuals understand themselves and their relationship to the global community.
6. synthesize complex arguments in written form.
