Applied study of original writing in the jazz idiom. Exploration of melodic, harmonic, rhythmic, and formal principles. Analysis of works by influential composers.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. compose pieces demonstrating advanced knowledge of tonal and modal harmony.
2. compose pieces that depart from standard forms such as AABA.
3. compose pieces that demonstrate conceptual and theoretical understanding of various trends in contemporary jazz.
