SW 468 - The Child in The Community (3 units) Analysis of the development and current programs in child welfare including the legal status of children.
Prerequisite(s): SW 321 .
Grading Basis: Graded Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Spring
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. explain the history, philosophy, goals, values, and structure of child welfare practice and child welfare service delivery. 2. describe the history and importance of strengths-based, collaborative practice with families. 3. demonstrate an understanding of the various interventions used in the child welfare system. 4. assess a given family’s structure, life cycle, strengths, and weaknesses using the concepts of family involvement and empowerment from the very first contact. 5. differentiate between the concepts of safety and risk and be able to identify the factors that contribute to them. 6. describe the practice competencies essential for direct practice work with vulnerable, at-risk families, including the importance of engagement, assessment, and collaborative case planning and case management.
