CEP 711 - Societal Issues and Special Topics in Clinical Mental Health (3 units) Seminar course designed to foster awareness, knowledge, and skills for counseling with diverse clients. Emphasizes social justice and advocacy in counseling with minority and oppressed clients.

Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. demonstrate an understanding of how living in a multicultural society, complete with racism, discrimination, sexism, power, privilege, and oppression, affects oneself and clients who are seeking clinical mental health counseling services. 2. articulate and recall literature that outlines effective theories, approaches, strategies, and techniques when working with and advocating to influence public policy and government relations for specific populations of clients with mental and emotional disorders, to include access to mental health services. 3. demonstrate an understanding of the implications of concepts such as internalized oppression and institutional racism, as well as the historical and current political climate regarding immigration, poverty, and welfare.
