EDSP 710 - Introduction to Disability Studies

(3 units)
We focus on how disability is defined and understood within social and cultural contexts. We will study perspectives regarding disability, including bioethics, the “medical model,” the civil rights perspective, and personal narratives.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. critically evaluate current definitions and theories of disability.
2. identify how attitudes and beliefs about individuals with disabilities may impact the personal and social view of disability.
3. identify and discuss some of the issues that influence individuals with specific disabilities.
4. examine the complex interplay of social, political, and economic forces as they relate to disability.
5. examine the impact of cultural values in conceptualizing individual difference.
