MICR 401 - Microbial Diversity and Evolution (3 units) Commonalities of diverse microbes and their evolutionary interrelationships. Sequence-based detection of uncultured microbes, homology-based prediction of their metabolic and physiological potential, and application of phylogenetic analysis to classify them.
Prerequisite(s): MICR 276 ; MICR 276L .
Grading Basis: Graded Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Spring
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. align sequences of protein or DNA and construct and interpret phylogenetic trees. 2. describe the physiological and metabolic characteristics of diverse microbial taxa and the genetic determinants of those characteristics. 3. outline and evaluate different approaches to characterize uncultivated microbes and complex microbial communities.
