EDRL 642 - Literacy Instruction I (3 units) Learning and instruction in reading, writing, oral language and literature for kindergarten through third grade, for Masters students.
Prerequisite(s): Admission to the Elementary Masters Program or the Literacy Masters Program.
Grading Basis: Graded Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Summer
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. articulate foundational philosophical and theoretical concepts in the reading, writing, listening, speaking, and viewing of primary-grade ELA instruction 2. identify and address current language arts curriculum philosophies and their specific application to the development of early literacy 3. demonstrate an understanding of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary development, comprehension, and writing and how they fit within an effective literacy curriculum in the primary grades. 4. read, analyze, and understand a battery of assessments appropriate to getting a complete picture of the literacy development of early readers and writers. 5. make instructional decisions based on literacy and learning in their own classrooms, exploring how to effectively use and interpret assessments and instructional strategies in their own classrooms.
