CRJ 447 - Gangs (3 units) An overview of the genesis, operations, and behaviors of gangs and gang members from North to South America. The course examines youth and adult gangs, both inside and outside of the prison setting.
Prerequisite(s): CRJ 104 .
Grading Basis: Graded Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Spring
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. demonstrate specialized knowledge regarding the history of gang formation. 2. demonstrate specialized knowledge regarding each of the major types of gangs. 3. critically discuss and write about the process by which gangs develop. 4. critically analyze the effectiveness and the failure of social efforts to control gangs. 5. display an understanding of the theories used to predict both gang involvement and desistence. 6. demonstrate specialized knowledge regarding the challenges inherent in the study of gangs. 7. articulate specific information regarding the backgrounds of gang members.
