HIST 367 - The Holocaust in its European Setting (3 units) CO10, CO11, CO12
This course examines Nazi persecution, the Holocaust, and anti-Semitism in its longer European historical context.
Prerequisite(s): ENG 102 .
Grading Basis: Graded

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. analyze, evaluate, and interpret primary sources with attention to content, historical and cultural context, genre, and language through class discussion and written assignments.
2. analyze and clearly explain the argument, main points, and use of evidence in secondary sources through class discussion and written assignments.
3. identify sources for research and clearly and effectively articulate an original interpretation in writing.
4. identify and take an informed position on historical and contemporary scholarly debates about the Holocaust in the context of European and global history.
5. describe and critically examine the local, European, and global reach of the Holocaust and Nazi persecution.
6. contextualize the history of the Holocaust within the longer history of European Jewish life in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, discourses on racism and antisemitism, and Nazi racial ideology.
7. demonstrate an awareness of, and ability to analyze, the ethical questions that confronted historical actors during the era of Holocaust and the rhetorical and theoretical use of the Holocaust in public discourse today.
