HIST 435D - The History of Human Rights (3 units) CO11, CO12, CO14
This course will survey the history of human rights and international law, particularly during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
Prerequisite(s): ENG 102 .
Grading Basis: Graded

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. analyze, evaluate, and interpret primary sources with attention to content, historical and cultural context, genre, and language.
2. analyze and clearly explain the argument, main points, and use of evidence in secondary sources through class discussion and written assignments.
3. analyze and synthesize arguments from primary and secondary sources to craft an original interpretation about the history of human rights.
4. describe how evolving and conflicting understandings human rights were shaped by their global context.
5. describe the evolution of ethical debates about human rights in recent centuries.
6. integrate what has been learned in previous classes to this course’s historical approach to human rights and bring that knowledge to bear on a contemporary issue of ethical concern related to human rights or international law.
7. integrate experiences and knowledge from past coursework and this class into crafting an exhibit or presentation, applying best practices from public history.
