EDRL 743 - Postmodern Approaches in Second Language Acquisition (3 units) Examines new theories and perspectives in English language teaching and learning. Recent developments in theories, approaches to language education (e.g., sociohistorical, postmodern, and poststructural lenses) designed to explore the social dimensions of language learning and teaching in K-16 education contexts, as well as post-modern/post-structural approaches that consider the role of context, discourse and interaction in connected and local education settings.
Grading Basis: Graded Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Fall - Odd Years
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. explain and interpret the ideas associated with postmodern theories and approaches to second language education. 2. synthesize and apply theories and research related to the nature and role of postmodern and poststructural theories’ influence on understanding of key topics related to second language education. 3. demonstrate knowledge of how current approaches to language learning and theory inform understandings of best practices for supporting bilingual/multilingual learners in academic settings. 4. conduct focused research on topics relating to current approaches to second language theory in educational contexts.
