SOC 624 - Race, Family, and Motherhood (3 units) Introduction to an intersectional perspective of motherhood and mothering by highlighting how Black, Indigenous, and mothers of color navigate interlocking structures of patriarchy, racial domination, and economic exploitation.

Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. explain the theoretical conceptions of motherhood and mothering. 2. analyze the of the social construction of the good mother/bad mother dichotomy. 3. assess the intersectional influence of patriarchy, capitalism and racism on our understanding of motherhood/mothering. 4. communicate diverse theoretical frameworks that draw on a rich body of interdisciplinary scholarship on racialized motherhood through class discussion and writing assignments.
