SPA 362 - Introduction to Audiology I (3 units) Introduction to physics of sound, anatomy and physiology of the ear, medical and surgical aspects of hearing loss, basic audiometric techniques for adults, and hearing conservation.
Prerequisite(s): SPA 366 . Corequisite(s): SPA 201 .
Grading Basis: Graded Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Spring
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. demonstrate knowledge of the scientific principles, methods and application of physics and nature of sound. 2. demonstrate knowledge of the basic structure and use of audiological instrumentation according to manufacturer’s specifications. 3. demonstrate knowledge to determine whether instrumentation is in calibration according to current accepted scientific standards. 4. demonstrate knowledge of conducting behavioral testing using current technology to assiss pure tone thresholds via air/bone conduction for adults. 5. demonstrate knowledge of the scientific principles behind masking and its relevance/application to audiological assessment. 6. demonstrate knowledge to interpret and summarize the pure tone audiological findings, evaluate functional use of hearing, and the effects of hearing loss on an individual’s ability to communicate.
