IS 475 - Database Design and Implementation

(3 units)
All issues related to the design and implementation of relational database systems; emphasizes entity relationship modeling, normalization and SQL programming with a relational DBMS.

Prerequisite(s): IS 301 ; IS 350  or CS 135 ; Business major or minor.

Grading Basis: Graded

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. design a database using the normilization process that is stable and understand why your design is stable.
2. use entity-relationship diagrams (ERD’s) to depict the design of a database.
3. use ERD’s to communicate design concepts with both technical and non-technical people.
4. use structured query language (SQL) to create, update, and access data in a database.
5. identify the objectives and design goals of a transaction database versus a data warehouse.
6. describe the general components of a database management system.
7. describe the job activities that are the responsibilities of a database administrator.
