MINE 361 - Operations Research Methods & Applied Statistics (3 units) Introduction to the theory of operations research and its applications in the mining industry; and introduction to applied statistical concepts necessary for mining engineers.
Prerequisite(s): MINE 210 .
Grading Basis: Graded Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Fall
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. formulate a real-world problem as a mathematical programming model. 2. demonstrate understanding of the theoretical workings of the simplex method for linear programming and perform sensitivity analysis to determine the direction and magnitude of change of a model’s optimal solution as the data change. 3. solve specialized linear programming problems like the transportation and assignment problems. 4. model a dynamic system as a queuing model and compute important performance measures. 5. solve network models like the shortest path, minimum spanning tree, and maximum flow problems. 6. understand and apply project management techniques like CPM & PERT for evaluation of project performance & scheduling. 7. demonstrate understanding of basic statistical concepts, such as, sampling and descriptive statistics, probability, measurement of error, probability distributions (binomial, poisson, normal, central limit theorem, etc.), and confidence intervals.
