AGSC 206 - Fundamentals of Animal Nutrition (3 units) Basic principles of nutrition including maintenance, growth, reproduction and lactation. Composition of feedstuffs and role of nutrients in the animals body.
Prerequisite(s): AGSC 100 ; CHEM 121A and CHEM 121L or CHEM 201 . Co-requisite(s): CHEM 122A and CHEM 122L or CHEM 202 .

Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. explain the relationships among organs, tissues, cells, hormones, and enzymes with respect to the physiological processes of nutrient digestion and metabolism. 2. explain the chemical nature and functions of various nutrients (water, carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, minerals, and vitamins) and how they are digested and utilized in different animals. 3. explain the mechanisms of eating, digestion, absorption, metabolism, and excretion of nutrients and the factors that affect these processes. 4. explain current methods of measuring the chemical composition and biological value of feed ingredients. 5. explain quantitative approaches to calculate nutritional requirements. 6. recognize similarities and differences in the nutritional physiology of various species.
