SPAN 318 - Spanish for the Professions

(3 units) CO10, CO11
Continued development of Spanish emphasizing usage in specific areas of the professions (including, but not limited to criminal justice, medicine, banking) and familiarizes students with the professional culture in the Hispanic world.

Prerequisite(s): One 300-400 level SPAN course.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. recognize and identify cross-cultural professional practices and etiquette in the US, Latin America, and Spain.
2. utilize specialized vocabulary in student-centered activities that simulate social and professional interactions.
3. apply critical thinking skills through research and discussion of specialized texts and Internet resources.
4. demonstrate professional writing skills using analytical and persuasive language, employing accurate vocabulary and grammar structures.
5. prepare formal oral presentations on content-based material, including historical, cultural, economic, and political systems from Spanish-speaking regions in a coherent and professional manner in comparison to the United States.
6. articulate an awareness of some of the central historical and present diversity issues addressed in the course, including race, ethnicity, genders, social class, and other identities.
7. identify similarities and differences of work-related issues confronted by workers in other coutries to evaluate their successes and challenges related to social, economic and policy factors, and explain implications for creating an equitable society.
