ATMS 615 - Introduction to Python for Atmospheric Science (3 units) An introduction to Python, a cross-platform programming language with a simple syntax and a powerful set of data analysis and visualization libraries, widely used to solve complex scientific problems. Students with little or no prior programming experience will learn basic programming algorithms, data types, control structures, graphics and how these can be applied to atmospheric and other environmental science problems.
Maximum units a student may earn: 3
Grading Basis: Graded Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Spring
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. do the computational thinking necessary for solving basic atmospheric and other environmental problems. 2. design basic program algorithms. 3. create Python code to solve a problem. 4. read and understand Python code. 5. plot basic graphs for data exploration. 6. build Python programs to handle, transform, analyze, and visualize scientific datasets. 7. apply Python to analyze and visualize atmospheric datasets relevant to their research projects.
