MUS 347 - Ethnomusicology: Global Perspectives on Music and Sound (3 units) CO11 This course explores global perspectives on music and sound through the lens of ethnomusicology. Ethnomusicology, or “the study of music in its social and cultural contexts,” constitutes a broad, interdisciplinary field of engagement with “music,” “sound,” and “culture.” Designed primarily for music majors, this course uses the perspectives of ethnomusicology to journey through the richness and diversity of music and sound on a global scale.

Prerequisite(s): General Education courses (CO1-CO3) completed; at least 1 course from CO4-CO8 completed.
Grading Basis: Graded Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Fall
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. demonstrate a greater understanding of human diversity through the lens of global music and sound. 2. analyze how diverse people engage with, conceptualize, and experience “music” in similar and/or different ways than our own. 3. critically examine the ways that difference and “otherness” are mobilized in examining global cultures, particularly from a US perspective. 4. produce well-supported positions that thoroughly and respectfully consider alternative viewpoints in class discussion, critique, and written assignments. 5. develop an independent research project guided by issues and themes that have emerged in the course.
