CHI 224 - Culture Through Chinese Calligraphy

Introduction of Chinese calligraphy in cultural, historical, philosophical as well as aesthetic context. Includes studio experience of Chinese calligraphy writing techniques. Taught in English. No prior knowledge of Chinese required.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. articulate the relationship between the Chinese calligraphy artwork and their cultural and historical context.
2. apply the knowledge of aesthetic principles and philosophical concepts to analyze the Chinese calligraphy artwork.
3. produce a display of artistic expression through the critical application of technique in Chinese calligraphy.
4. evaluate the cultural differences between the West and the East, and the continuity and changes with historical and contemporary global significance.
5. contextualize current experiences and apply the knowledge of historical, cultural and literary content in producing oral and written research projects.
