AM 253 - Deaf Culture (3 units) CO10 This course provides an introduction to Deaf culture in the United States. Students will gain an understanding and appreciation of Deaf cultural norms, life and experiences, and expression in the arts. They will also apply a critical lens to Deaf representation in media and its effects on present day issues for the Deaf community.

Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. describe critical aspects of Deaf culture relating to communication, values, and expression. 2. contrast between aspects of Deaf culture that are similar and different to assorted hearing cultures. 3. demonstrate cultural competency for the Deaf community through the use of culturally sensitive language and behaviors. 4. appraise Deaf representation in media with an eye for problematic portrayals in relation to current Deaf issues.
