AM 254 - Deaf History (3 units) CO10 This course provides an introduction to Deaf history in the United States. Students will gain an understanding of the impacts of the medical, social, and cultural-linguistic perspectives on Deaf people through recent history, as well as recognize the role of ableism and oralism in shaping Deaf experiences. They will explore Deaf empowerment movements through history as well as present day issues for the Deaf community.

Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. describe the impacts of different approaches to deafness and education on the oppression or autonomy of the Deaf community historically. 2. distinguish between oppressive or empowering influences and interactions with the Deaf community as a marginalized group in the United States.. 3. demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of Deaf history. 4. appraise contemporary Deaf issues and approaches to those issues using lessons from problematic approaches in the past with an eye for whether they empower or oppress in the search for equity.
