CAS 662 - Ethics and Technology in Behavioral Health Practice

(3 units)
This course will address common ethical dilemmas behavioral health providers face related to the use of technology, social networking sites, and web-based search engines. Case scenarios, group discussion related to videos, practice sessions, and other activities will be used to highlight these dilemmas and encourage discussions among students. Content includes ethics, competency, digital styles, privacy and confidentiality, social networking sites, and applying ethical decision-making models.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. describe the ethical concerns related to the use of technology and social media that a behavioral health provider must consider.
2. identify privacy consideration regarding the use of technology and other digital platforms in the provision of behavioral health services.
3. identify elements that behavioral health providers and peer support specialists must consider when utilizing social media and other digital forums.
4. articulate how a behavioral health provider’s digital footprint can impact their professional identify and the integrity of the field.
5. describe and demonstrate the use of ethical decision models within the practice of behavioral health services.
6. describe the impact that technology has on issues related to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.
7. critically examine the use of technology as a practice competence in the provision of behavioral health services.
8. critically analyze personal preferences for communication and how this can impact working relationships with colleagues and clients.
