REM 350 - Grasslands of the World

(3 units) CO11

Examines the evolution, ecology, cultural uses, and management of global grassland ecosystems. Includes several learning units on dominant taxonomic grass tribes on all continents and the key biological and ecological aspects of several dominant species within each tribe.

A mix of in-person and online learning materials and activities. Students will be provided with a full-semester schedule detailing which days are in-person and which days are for independent online learning.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. explain the underlying ecological, social and economic challenges and opportunities of major global grassland ecosystems and corresponding management approaches.
2. critically compare and contrast the ecology of major global grasslands.
3. map and summarize the biogeography and cultural land uses of major global grassland ecosystems.
4. describe the morphology and key physiological processes of grasses species, including ways in which grass species may respond to fire, grazing, and flooding.
5. list 5-7 taxonomic grass tribes on each continent and summarize the characteristics of each tribe.
6. describe expected plant community dynamics for a given grassland ecosystem.
7. apply grassland plant identification skills.
