MLS 608 - Clinical Microbiology

(2 units)
This course will introduce students to the microbial species that cause human disease. The course will cover pathogenic bacteria, fungi, viruses, and protozoa, and discuss current topics including antibiotic resistance, public health threats, and global health. Instruction will cover the theory, practical application, and pathogenesis of tests and organisms encountered in microbiology, including collection, quality control, quality assurance, safety, setup, identification, susceptibility testing, and reporting results.

Maximum units a student may earn: 2

Prerequisite(s): MLS 605  and MLS 606

Grading Basis: Graded
Units of Lecture: 2
Offered: Every Spring

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. describe the structure, classification, and physiology of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites.
2. explain host-pathogen interactions and the principles of microbial pathogenesis and immunity.
3. compare modes of transmission, reservoirs, and epidemiology of infectious diseases.
4. differentiate clinically significant microorganisms by their morphological and biochemical characteristics.
5. discuss the clinical significance of normal flora and opportunistic infections.
6. describe antimicrobial classes, mechanisms of action, and resistance mechanisms.
7. interpret the role of the microbiology laboratory in disease surveillance and outbreak investigations.
8. evaluate the clinical relevance of laboratory findings in correlation with disease presentations.
9. explain the principles and applications of molecular techniques in medical microbiology.
10. summarize quality assurance, safety, and regulatory standards relevant to microbiology practice.
