MLS 605 - Clinical I – Introduction to Medical Laboratory Science (1 unit) Introduces Medical Laboratory Science through supervised clinical experience in general lab practice. Students gain foundational knowledge and hands-on skills in pipetting, microscopy, microbiology techniques such as culture setups and Gram staining, and exposure to molecular diagnostics. Covers specimen handling, safety protocols, and an overview of lab departments and workflow. Prepares students for advanced coursework and clinical rotations.

Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. describe the structure and function of key laboratory departments, including microbiology, chemistry, hematology, immunology, immunohematology and molecular diagnostics. 2. use and maintain basic laboratory equipment, including micropipettes, centrifuges, and microscopes. 3. perform accurate pipetting techniques using both automatic and serologic pipettes. 4. correctly label, handle, and process laboratory specimens according to standard operating procedures. 5. perform basic microbiological techniques, including culture setup, and Gram staining, with attention to aseptic technique. 6. use a microscope, including identification of stained organisms and cells at appropriate magnification. 7. describe the principles and applications of molecular diagnostic testing, including PCR and nucleic acid extraction. 8. identify pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical causes of error in laboratory testing. 9. apply laboratory safety practices by using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), following biosafety protocols, and properly disposing of biohazardous materials in compliance with OSHA and laboratory regulatory guidelines. 10. demonstrate professional behavior, communication, and teamwork appropriate to a clinical laboratory environment.
