ATE 710 - Orthopedic Assessment of Lower Extremity Injuries (3 units) In-depth study of the initial on-field and clinical evaluation of orthopedic injuries and conditions of the lower extremities and spine. Includes anatomy review, obtaining a medical history, assessing function, and selecting and using tests and measures that assess for common orthopedic injuries.

Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. perform a subjective assessment to review symptoms, injury mechanism, and functional limitations. 2. complete observation or inspection of posture, gait, edema, and alignment. 3. perform structural examination including palpation of joints, muscle atrophy assessment, and rotational alignment. 4. administer functional testing to assess mobility and strength through movement, such as single-leg squats, running, and jumping. 5. document findings accurately using the SOAP note format (Subjective, Objective, Assessment, Plan). 6. identify management strategies for emergent and non-emergent injuries.
