University General Course Catalog 2026-2027

IS 651 - Advanced Generative Artificial Intelligence Development

(3 units)
This advanced course focuses on the customization and deployment of Large Language
Models (LLMs) within software development environments. Building on foundational
Python and API concepts, students learn to integrate, fine-tune, and optimize LLMs for
specialized applications. Course topics include LLM frameworks, dataset training and
pathing and web-based implementation.

Maximum units a student may earn: 3

Prerequisite(s): IS 450  or IS 650

Grading Basis: Graded
Units of Lecture: 3
Offered: Every Spring

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. design and implement software applications that integrate custom large language models (LLMs) using OpenAI and related frameworks.
2. analyze, modify, and optimize LLM configurations to enhance performance, accuracy, and responsiveness for task-specific applications.
3. develop and deploy web applications that integrate LLMs through API connections, ensuring functional and secure data exchange.
4. apply effective data management and preprocessing techniques to improve model output quality, relevance, and computational efficiency.
5. synthesize programming, data science, and API integration skills to design, build, and evaluate a functional AI-based prototype addressing a real-world challenge.
