CHS 470 - Introduction to Public Health and Aging (3 units) Introduction to topics and issues at the crossroads of public health and aging, including demography, epidemiology, stereotypes, and health promotion and wellness.
Prerequisite(s): CH 201 or CH 202 or CH 203 ; ENG 102 ; junior or senior standing.
Units of Lecture: 3 General Capstone Offered Every Spring Student Learning Outcomes (if available): Upon completion of this course: 1. Students will be able to articulate in writing, or, if called upon, verbally, the public health paradigm as it applies to aging. 2. Students will be able to demonstrate in writing, or, if called upon, verbally, the ability to compare and contrast aging as a population-level and individual-level process. 3. Students will be able to demonstrate in writing, or, if called upon, verbally, the clinical, social, and environmental factors for maximizing physical, social, and psychological functioning in later life. 4. Students will be able to demonstrate in writing, or if called upon, verbally, a description of how aging is a lifespan process and how the first 50 years matter for health risks in the second 50 years of life. 5. Students will be able to demonstrate in writing, or if called upon, verbally, an evaluation of the potential for public health to positively impact the future of our aging population. 6. Students will be able to demonstrate in writing, or if called upon, orally, the ability to express ideas clearly, cogently, and succinctly.
