CHS 640 - Injury and Violence Prevention

(3 units)
Examines injuries/violence as public health issues. Causes/consequences are examined in areas such as car accidents, home/work safety, area crime, family violence, and sports injuries.

Student Learning Outcomes (if available):
Upon completion of this course:
1. Students will be able to analyze injuries and violence as preventable public health issues.
2. Students will be able to connect individual and area level determinants with specific injuries and violence within specific age, sex, and racial/ethnic populations.
3. Students will be able to evaluate the consequences of injuries and violence as measured through exams and assignments.
4. Students will be able to devise strategies for injury/violence prevention in an effort to solve an existing problem at the population level via coursework.
5. Students will be able to collaborate with others on a group project while individually evaluating a specific issue and hypothesizing solutions.
6. Students will be able to identify the unique ethical considerations related to these topics and will be able to support ideas for ethical solutions to problems through written and oral work.
7. Students will be able to recognize how a multidisciplinary approach to injury/violence prevention is important.
8. Students will be able to consider these issues among diverse groups of people and will understand how certain types of injuries/violence are more prevalent in various racial/ethnic groups, age groups, and by sex.
