Secondary Education and Spanish (Language and Society Specialization), B.A./B.A. in Ed.


Description


Students who complete this Dual Degree Program will earn two degrees: the Bachelor of Arts in Education/Secondary Education and the Bachelor of Arts in Spanish. This program provides students with a foundational background in Spanish linguistics, literature, and culture, and includes all coursework required to apply for a license to teach Spanish in Nevada. Students who successfully complete the program are prepared to pursue secondary school teaching, graduate school, or an immediate career using Spanish.

Admission Requirements (Secondary Education)


In order to apply for admission to the Secondary Teacher Education program, students must have completed at least 30 credits of college coursework with a grade point average of no less than 2.75 (on a 4-point scale) and have completed EDU 202  or the equivalent with a grade of “C” (not “C-“) or better. The 30 credits must include core requirements in English, math, and the sciences. In addition, applicants must have passed all three parts of the Praxis I Core Skills tests or passed all parts of the California Basic Education Skills Test (CBEST). The application for full admission can be found on the College of Education website.

III. Additional College Requirements (0-20 units)


Units may vary depending on initial course placement in foreign language coursework. College minor requirement waived per multiple-degree policy so long as students remain in BA/BAEd program; students who declare this dual-degree program and subsequently choose to withdraw and declare BA Spanish must at that point declare and complete a minor.

A. Foreign Language (0-14 units)


Successful completion of the foreign language requirement may be accomplished through one of four options:

  1. complete a fourth semester college course in a foreign language or in American Sign Language;
  2. demonstrate proficiency through placement examination or other means determined by the Department of World Languages and Literatures, including minimum CBAPE, SAT II, or IB scores;
  3. show transcript evidence of successful completion of four years of high school coursework in the same foreign language; or
  4. participate in a Studies Abroad program pre-approved by the college to meet the foreign language requirement.

B. College Breadth Requirement (0-6 units)


Students seeking a Bachelor of Arts degree in the college shall be required to take, within the College of Liberal Arts, 6 credits that are outside the departments in which they major or minor, and that exclude courses taken to fulfill the Silver Core General Education requirements (Core Objectives 1 through 7).

IV. Major Requirements (75 units)


In Spanish, all units must be 300 - 400 level. Twelve of the 39 required units must be completed on the University of Nevada, Reno campus.
