Description
The mission of the Bachelor of Arts in Musical Theatre is to help students receive a university education along with intense, conservatory-style training while exposing them to an environment that reflects the diversity and richness of the profession. Students admitted into this program through an audition process will confront the content as artists and scholars. Building on Stanislavski’s emphasis on character-based action, objective, and truth, students learn how to develop their technical skillsets into personalized craft. Musical theatre productions and performance lab classes allow students to explore integrating their training into a unique, fully-realized performer. This interdisciplinary major allows students and faculty to explore connections that unite acting, singing and dancing. Students will graduate well prepared to immerse themselves in the musical theatre profession.

I. Silver Core General Education Requirements (24-27 units)
Students in this major must meet all Silver Core Objectives (CO1 through CO14). Courses satisfying Core Objectives are designated (e.g., CO9) in General Catalog curricula and course descriptions.
A. Silver Core Writing and Prerequisite (3-6 units) - CO1, CO3
B. Silver Core Mathematics and Prerequisite (3 units maximum) - CO2

III. Additional College Requirements (6-20 units)
A. Foreign Language Requirement (0-14 units)
Successful completion of the foreign language requirement may be accomplished through one of four options:
- complete a fourth semester college course in a foreign language or in American Sign Language;
- demonstrate proficiency through placement examination or other means determined by the Department of World Languages and Literatures, including minimum CBAPE, SAT II, or IB scores;
- show transcript evidence of successful completion of four years of high school coursework in the same foreign language; or
- participate in a Studies Abroad program pre-approved by the college to meet the foreign language requirement.
B. College Breadth Requirement (6 units)
Students seeking a Bachelor of Arts degree in the college shall be required to take, within the College of Liberal Arts, 6 units that are outside the departments in which they major or minor, and that exclude courses taken to fulfill the Silver Core General Education requirements (Core Objectives 1 through 7).
Musical Theatre students must choose Breadth courses that also satisfy the CO9 and CO12 requirements above.
