The journalism minor helps students from any major learn to analyze, communicate and produce strong, accurate and persuasive media for multiple audiences on multiple platforms. Students learn to tell stories in text, graphics, audio and video; explore professional opportunities in news and documentary, advertising and public relations, bilingual media and visual communication. The school balances enduring values of fair and ethical communication with emerging practices and new technologies. Learning to analyze and produce ethical media deepens civic engagement and augments professional careers in many fields.

I. Program Requirements (21 units)


Students majoring in another field may minor in Journalism by completing the following courses:

After the first four courses (JOUR 103 JOUR 107  , JOUR 108 JOUR 208 ), students will work with their advisors to select appropriate electives from the above list. Freshmen and sophomores may not enroll in any 400-level courses.

To be accepted as a minor in journalism, a student must have completed  JOUR 103 JOUR 107 , JOUR 108  with a C or better and with a combined GPA of 2.5 or higher having earned a C or better in each of the three courses. Once accepted as a minor, a student must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 in journalism to continue.

ACCREDITATION: The Donald W. Reynolds School of Journalism is accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications. Accreditation was first granted in 1970.
