Black Studies, Minor

Black Studies is an 18-unit interdisciplinary minor housed within the Department of Gender, Race and Identity (GRI). Focused on a critical and systematic examination of the histories, cultures, knowledges, experiences, and communities of people of African descent globally, the minor offers a variety of courses in the arts, the humanities, and social sciences. Black Studies emphasizes comparative, transnational, and intersectional approaches to study the diverse cultural and historical contributions of African and African Diaspora communities and foregrounds questions of social justice for those communities. This includes issues ranging from immigration and citizenship, religious freedom, health care, education, poverty, law and justice, gender and sexuality, and other topics.
Students must complete courses relating to the life experiences, theories and epistemologies of peoples of African descent in broad global context, emphasizing historical, contemporary, and intersectional implications.

I. Program Requirements (18 units)
- Minor GPA | 2.0
- Minor Upper-Division Units | 9
- Minor Residency Requirement | 6 Upper-Division Units in the minor at UNR
- Unit Overlap Limits | Per College of Liberal Arts policy, no more than 9 units counted toward any major may be reused to meet the requirements of this minor.
- Courses taken through USAC and other approved study abroad programs may be used to complete the minor (with advisor approval).

C. Electives (12 units)
- Of the 12 units of electives, at least 9 units must be in upper-division (300-400 level) courses.
- Among the 12 units of electives, 6-9 units must be from Group 1, and 3-6 units from Group 2.
- Where courses are crosslisted between ETS, GRI, or WMST and another department, students are encouraged to enroll on the ETS, GRI, or WMST side of the course.

These courses consider Black diasporic experiences both in the United States and transnationally in historical and contemporary contexts. Note that in addition to the courses listed, GRI 491, GRI 498 and GRI 499 may apply to Group 1 Electives with advisor approval and when designed to focus on Black diasporic experiences. HDFS 400 may apply to Group 1 Electives when taught on the topic Hip Hop Studies.
