English (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), Minor

The TESOL minor provides students who plan to teach English as a Second Language either at home or abroad with essential background courses in both Linguistics and Education.

In general, students will not be allowed to major AND minor in English. However, certain exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis. These must be officially approved by the Director of Undergraduate Studies in English, in accordance with the following strictly predetermined list of combinations.

The minors the department offers can be grouped into “English” (all literature and writing) and “Linguistics” (Language and Linguistics and TESOL). Students may combine a major/minor in “English” and “Linguistics,” but cannot combine majors/minors from within either of these groups.

Students cannot apply any courses fulfilling major requirements toward the minor. Instead, they must complete 18 units of additional upper-division electives in English for their minor.
