Equity & Diversity in Education, M.S.


The master’s program in Equity & Diversity in Education (EDE) offers advanced study on use of inclusive methods to serve diverse learners in the classroom and beyond. This program allows educators and those in related fields to enhance their knowledge, skills, and dispositions to work more effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Multiple dimensions of human diversity are addressed through the program’s course work, with special attention to gender, race/ethnicity, national origin, language, social class, and exceptionality. The program may be completed fully online or may include some face-to-face courses.

Program Objectives/Student Learning Outcomes


  • Students will demonstrate knowledge of equity and diversity in education.
  • Students will demonstrate an ability to apply research and theory on equity and diversity in education to practice and to conduct critical self-analysis of that practice.
  • Students will exhibit dispositions appropriate to equity and diversity in education.
  • Students will display writing skills that are scholarly, culturally sensitive, and mechanically correct.

Admission Requirements


Admission to the program will be based on a candidate’s qualifications as determined by a review of the following:

  • Program application
  • GPA (minimum 2.75 or 3.0 last two years)
  • Statement of professional goals
  • Resume
  • Two letters of recommendation

Program coursework is tailored to students’ academic and professional needs. Courses taken should be approved in advance by program faculty to ensure that they will count toward degree completion.

I. Program Requirements


The M.S. Degree in Equity & Diversity in Education requires students to develop a program of study in conjunction with their advisor and committee that includes a minimum of 30 graduate units, at least 15 of which must be at the 700 level. A maximum of six graduate units of S/U grades may be applied toward a master’s degree.

Completion requirements for the master’s degree include:

  1. Filing a program of study, approved by the Graduate School.
  2. Maintaining a 3.0 GPA in all graduate work.
  3. Successful completion of a culminating comprehensive examination or project (included as a three-unit course within the program).
