English (Creative Writing), Minor

Students minoring in Creative Writing can take classes in writing fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, screenwriting, and editing/publishing. The Minor in Creative Writing prepares students who seek to publish their creative work in professional venues, and/or pursue graduate study in creative writing. The minor also offers skills useful to students seeking a career in mainstream editing/publishing, as well as other fields in which creative communication is valued: marketing, advertising, nonprofit/political work, and law, among others.

In general, students will not be allowed to major AND minor in English. However, certain exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis. These must be officially approved by the Director of Undergraduate Studies in English, in accordance with the following strictly predetermined list of combinations.

The minors the department offers can be grouped into “English” (all literature and writing) and “Linguistics” (Language and Linguistics and TESOL). Students may combine a major/minor in “English” and “Linguistics,” but cannot combine majors/minors from within either of these groups.

Students cannot apply any courses fulfilling major requirements toward the minor. Instead, they must complete 18 units of additional upper-division electives in English for their minor.
