African/Postcolonial Studies, Minor


A minor in African/Postcolonial Studies is offered through the University of Nevada, Reno. It is supported by courses that are currently offered campus wide in African History, Anthropology, Political science, Sociology, English, Music, Arabic (College of Liberal Arts), Geography (College of Science), Journalism (Reynolds School of Journalism), etc. It is also supported by the University of Nevada, Reno’s University Studies Abroad Consortium (USAC) programs in Ghana and South Africa.

Student Learning Outcomes


Students who successfully complete this program will be able to:

  • read and critically evaluate primary and secondary sources relating to Africa and its position in the world.
  • demonstrate an advanced level of understanding of the social, cultural, and religious diversities within Africa and their relevance in broader historical and geographic questions.
  • articulate in writing or verbally the important features of past and contemporary cultures in and issues of the African continent and its diaspora.

I. Program Requirements (18 units)


  • Students must complete 18 units in courses relating to the histories, languages, and cultures of Africa and to postcolonial studies. 
  • At least 12 units must come from Group A, while up to 6 may come from language courses (Group B) or from courses with a broader geographic and cultural focus (Group C). 
  • In total, 12 units must be earned in courses numbered 300 or above. 
  • Courses taken through USAC and other approved study abroad programs may be used to complete the minor.
  • Students seeking a minor in African/Postcolonial Studies may take HIST 230 HIST 231 , or HIST 231A  as a prerequisite course.

C. Group C (0-6 units)


The following courses offer a broader geographic and cultural focus on Postcolonial Africa. Complete up to 6 units from Group C.
