NOTE: For all students entering the Bachelor of Music–Applied Music and the Bachelor of Music–Music Education degree programs, any grade of C- or lower in the coursework for the major must be repeated (courses may only be repeated once).

I. University Core Curriculum Requirements (36-46 units)

NOTE : Students who place in ENG 102  are not required to complete ENG 101 .

Music majors will satisfy the Fine Arts requirement through the Ensemble requirement.

Music Education majors are exempt from the College of Liberal Arts foreign language and breadth requirements.

III. Major Requirements (102-104 units)


Entrance Audition is required.

B. Lower Division Applied Individual Instruction (6-8 units)


Applied music units must be on a single instrument or voice. Vocal Music Education majors may use two units of MUS 105 - Vocal Techniques  to apply toward the eight units required in lower division applied music.

C. Upper Division Applied Individual Instruction (8 units)


Upper division audition required. Applied music units must be on a single instrument or voice.

D. Piano Competency (0 units)


A piano proficiency exam must be passed at least 1 full year prior to anticipated internship.

This outline should serve as a guide for students entering the BM-ME program in fall of an even-numbered year. This IS NOT a substitute for advising. You MUST meet with the Coordinator of the Music Education program each term as you plan for the following semester.

Prerequisites for supervised internship:

  • Completed a minimum of 30 units of college coursework
  • 2.74 overall GPA
  • Passing scores from either PPST or CBEST
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Short essay
  • Application

Piano Proficiency Exam - must be passed at least 1 full year prior to internship (Spring 4) at the latest.

PRAXIS II Exams - must be passed for name to be forwarded to Nevada State Department of Education for licensure

Note(s):


Applied study -

  • if your instrument is voice, enroll in MUS 105 - Vocal Techniques  during your first term.
  • 100-level lower division applied study (6-8 units)
  • 300-level upper division applied study (8 units)

Ensemble -

  • if your instrument is voice, piano, or guitar, enroll in a choral ensemble (Concert Choir or Chamber Choir)
  • if your instrument is wind or percussion, enroll in an instrumental ensemble (Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, or Symphony Orchestra)
  • if your instrument is violin, viola, cello, or bass, enroll in Symphony Orchestra

Functional Piano ( MUS 109 , MUS 110 , MUS 209 , MUS 210 )

  • these courses are optional and depend upon your piano skills. They will prepare you for the piano proficiency exam. This preparation can also be done through applied study.

Diction I (MUS 141 ), Diction II MUS 142 ), & Vocal Pedagogy (MUS 417 ) - you will choose two of these courses as part of your degree program.

Barrier Exam - must be passed to enroll in upper-division applied study. See your applied instructor regarding the contents of the exam.
