University General Course Catalog 2025-2026 (DRAFT)

Repeat Enrollment Limit

Non-repeatable courses - Courses designed to be taken one time and where credit can be earned only once. The majority of courses offered at the university are non-repeatable.

Courses repeatable for additional credit - Courses that can be taken more than once in which credit can be earned for each attempt. Examples of such courses may include, but are not limited to: “special topics” classes, internship or practicum courses, and thesis or dissertation courses. The course description of a class that can be repeated for additional credit will specify the maximum amount of credit that can be earned under that course number before additional credits can no longer be earned.

Non-repeatable courses may be repeated to gain additional grade points or complete a grade replacement. The number of credits repeated are added to those attempted, but no additional credits are earned. For courses repeatable for additional credit, any repeats of a course number in excess of the maximum allowable credits for that course will be treated as non-repeatable.

IMPORTANT! Repeating a course may impact a student’s financial aid. Please contact Student Financial Services at (775) 784-4666 prior to repeating a course to assess the possible consequences.
Undergraduate Repeat Policy
Students may enroll in non-repeatable courses twice without special permission. Effective for the Fall 2016 registration period, advisor permission is required to enroll in a non-repeatable course a third time. After a student’s third attempt at a non-repeatable course necessary to complete degree requirements, the student may be required to take the course at another institution and transfer it to the university (per course transfer policies NSHE Transfer and Articulation Resources ) or request an exception to the policy from the Associate Dean of the college, who may choose to consult the instructor of the course and/or the department chair, to enroll in the course again at the university. Where a course description or the requirements of a degree program in this catalog set a lower limit on the number of attempts in a non-repeatable course than outlined by this policy, an advisor, department or college shall be under no obligation to allow a student to repeat the course more times than the stated limit.
Undergraduate students may retake a non-repeatable course in an attempt to earn a better grade, in accordance with the Grade Replacement Policy . The ability to re-enroll in coursework for grade replacement purposes is subject to the course repeat policy outlined above.
