SPA 320 - Phonetics (3 units) Practical course in the science of speech sounds with emphasis on transcription of the International Phonetic Alphabet.
Corequisite(s): SPA 301 .
Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Fall Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course: 1. Students will be able to explain how clinical phonetics as a branch of applied phonetics. 2. Students will be able to explain the following terminology: phonetics, dialects, registers, and idiolects, the system of speech production. 3. Students will be able to interpret the International Phonetic Alphabet when transcribing. 4. Students will be able to identify/describe the sounds of American English using classification systems. 5. Students will be able to accurately transcribe isolated and connected speech using the IPA. 6. Students will be able to recognize and apply special symbols and diacritics. 7. Students will be able to demonstrate ability to read phonetic transcription.
