EDSC 453 - Teaching Secondary Mathematics

Instructional strategies in light of current research on mathematics education.

Prerequisite(s): EDSC 321 ; admission to a secondary education program.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. identify and explain the causes of the current state of mathematics education as articulated by NCTM in Principles and Standards for School Mathematics and other appropiate sources.
2. solve problems using multiple solution strategies in order to analyze mathematical concepts and skills.
3. explain the roles of problem solving, manipulatives, cooperative learning, and technology in the teaching of mathematics.
4. plan lessons that incorporate a variety teaching strategies consistent with the recommendations of NCTM’s Principles and Standards.
5. describe and discuss a variety of means by which mathematical learning can be assessed including classroom applications of assessment as well as broader standardized tests including those developed by the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium.
6. develop and adapt instruction that meets the needs of all students in the diverse classrooms in which the teaching of mathematics occurs.
7. define and discuss the teacher’s role in the mathematics classroom, including responsibility to the diversity of students and their various learning styles.
8. develop an appreciation for the field of mathematics education, and the professional responsibilities of the secondary mathematics teacher.
